My
grandparents came from the beautiful seaside region of Abruzzi
and the sunny region of Calabria, Italy. My grandparents left
Italy early 1900's and settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Many other Italian Presbyterians settled there also, to pass
on many traditions from the “old country”.
It
was there, in the East Liberty section, that my parents met,
fell in love and were married. Wonderful traditions like pasta
every Sunday and Thursday were carried to the next generation.
When WWII broke out my father became a Baker and Cook for
his army career.
“California,
Here We Come” brought this young soldier and his family
to the Los Angeles area where in 1961 they bought and operated
D’Eliso’s Bakery in Whittier, California. My younger
brothers and I worked at the bakery around our school schedules,
just like good Italian children!
My
parents are retired many years now and my brothers and I continued
on in the bakery and food business. I have been married for
40 years and we have 3 children and 8 grandchildren.
After
a recent extended family trip to Italy to visit my grandparent’s
villages, the passion to bake and serve authentic cookies
and cakes from our heritage was ignited.
Our
youngest daughter, Elizabeth, walked the narrow streets of
Italy with us and, together, we formed “My Little Taste
of Italy” baking and serving, with passion, Italian
cookies and cakes.
